In my blog entry this afternoon, I mentioned a back-and-forth Bill Belichick had with a reporter about comparing YPC and other rushing stats from this year's two preseason games to last year's stats.

Belichick didn't specify which he was talking about, regular season stats or preseason stats, and said something about production being the same this year as last year.

I wrongly assumed it was regular season stats he was referring to. The Pats were far better last year against the run during the season than they had been in the first two games of this preseason.

But the preseason run defense stats last year were actually worse in YPC than this year (4.5 in 2004 to 4.1 this year).
