The Patriots have released DB Willie Andrews, one day after his arrest for illegal possession of a large-capacity firearm and assault with a dangerous weapon.
Andrews allegedly was waving a gun around during an argument with his girlfriend at his Mansfield home early yesterday morning; while he was waving it, it touched the woman on the temple. Reportedly, the woman had accused Andrews of being unfaithful, leading to the argument. Later yesterday morning, the gun alleged to be involved was found in a Dumpster near Andrews' apartment.
He is being held without bail pending a dangerousness hearing on Thursday.
This is not the first time Andrews has been in trouble for gun charges; before he enrolled at Baylor, he spent several days in jail on illegal possession charges.
Just days after New England's loss to the Giants in February, Andrews was arrested in Lowell, Mass. for marijuana possession with intent to distribute and driving an unregistered motor vehicle. In that incident, he was found to have a half-pound of marijuana and over $6,800 in cash on him. During a May hearing, Andrews plead guilty to marijuana possession and the case was continued for a year without a finding.
The 24-year old was a seventh-round draft pick in 2006; he had become a special-teams ace but rarely got on the field with the defense.
Also: New England announced the signing of rookie LB Bo Ruud. Ruud was the 197th pick in this year's draft, out of Nebraska, and the sixth member of his family to don the Huskers' uniform, including his great-grandfather, father, and brother, Barrett, now a member of the Tampa Bay Buccaneers.
