The Patriots have announced that S Tank Williams has been placed on season-ending injured reserve with a knee injury.

He was hurt during Thursday night's preseason opener against Baltimore, on a first-half kickoff return by the Ravens' Yamon Figurs.

Williams, who had been working almost exclusively at the inside linebacker spot, was hoping to resurrect his once-promising career in New England. In 2006, in his first days of training camp with the Vikings -- whom he signed a free-agent deal with just months earlier -- he fractured a kneecap and didn't play that season. Last year, he was mainly a reserve for Minnesota. He tore the ACL in his left knee in the 2004 season with Tennessee.

New England signed C Jeff Shoate to take Williams' spot on the roster. Shoate, 27, has played in 14 career games, all with the Broncos.
