Click the play button below to hear Shalise Manza Young's comments, recorded this morning. The topics: the penchant of the Patriots' defense for looking really bad on first drives, the latest on the backup quarterback battle and the chances of someone entering the fray from the outside, and guys who might have earned themselves a job last night (Chad Jackson, are we talking about you?).
Here's what Shalise said on the defense:
"They can say that it's just the preseason, they were just experimenting and weren't really game planning, but you can't always just flip a switch and go from not that intense to all intense, or not performing to all of the sudden performing at your best. Maybe I'm wrong, but it definitely will be interesting, and Kansas City is a pretty easy opponent to start with."
And about the quarterback situation:
"We could see a scenario where the Patriots bring in a veteran quarterback, a veteran type of backup ... who has the experience has run games before in the regular-season setting. ... Damon Huard, who actually was with the Patriots a few years ago, could end up being on the market come tomorrow afternoon. And something like that -- where you bring in Huard to be the true backup and give Gutierrez another year of seasoning, another year as a number three, and then Kevin O'Connell comes down with the Foxboro flu, or something like that, that lands him on the IR and it becomes a true learning year for him."
I hope they cut Cassel, and maybe even Guiterrez. Neither one of them could win an NFL game. Huard would be a good option, same with Todd Collins if Washington lets him go in favor of the kid from Hawaii.
I do not think that the defense is ready. This could be a down year. The Pats are looking awfully bad. Brady is great, but he doesn't play run defense. If the run defense is as bad as it looks, this could be an 8-8 year or worse.
