Bill Belichick has just wrapped his press conference for the morning, and there was a funny moment when he admonished some bankers in the room for this afternoon's foreclosure prevention workshop for being rude -- they didn't end their conversation when he came to the podium, and then one's cell phone started ringing loudly. Belichick shot them his look and asked for some quiet.
Here's some of the topics he touched on:
** With only one kicker and one punter in camp, Belichick said the team monitors the number of reps Stephen Gostkowski and Chris Hanson take. But both are in good condition, he added, and there haven't been any issues thus far. As for there not being any on-field challengers to Gostkowski and Hanson, Belichick said they're aware that there's always other kickers out there.
** LaMont Jordan has done well to pick up the playbook and with his performance thus far; asked if the team might keep the five veteran running backs on the roster -- Jordan, Laurence Maroney, Sammy Morris, Kevin Faulk and Heath Evans -- Belichick replied that they'll do what's best for the football team but then added that if the team has kept four quarterbacks, which they did in 2000 when Tom Brady was a rookie, then they'd certainly consider five backs.
** He was asked about the 80-man roster, which some coaches have complained about. Belichick grimaced and said "there's nothing we can do about that now anyway." Commissioner Roger Goodell apparently circulated a memo last week telling teams to stop griping about the limits (the max used to be 86 players, but was reduced when NFL Europa folded), which likely influenced Belichick's answer.
** On Wesley Britt, who yesterday was working at left tackle as Matt Light has now not practiced since Aug. 26: "Wes came to us, he was on the practice squad, and he's developed a lot. He has a big frame that you'd like a tackle to have. He's done nothing but get better since he's been here. When he's had the opportunity to play he's been very competitive, including Thursday night."
