Now what? Cassel, O'Connell, a veteran?

While there's word out that Tom Brady will undergo an MRI tomorrow on his left knee, various media reports are saying that he has suffered a serious injury, likely a tear of his ACL (anterior cruciate ligament).

If that's true, the reigning league MVP is almost certainly out for the season.

And if that's true, what next? As we saw today, Matt Cassel was serviceable. But word is at this point he's more of a game manager who will be asked to not lose the game.

We've heard whispers that the Pats are very high on Kevin O'Connell, and that the rookie could end up as the starter in a couple of weeks. But is he ready to step into that role?

As for Matt Gutierrez, whom many thought was ready to step into the backup role (including yours truly), the feeling is that in spite of his solid preseason work, he just doesn't have the tools to be an NFL starter, or at least not as many tools as Cassel.

NBC Sports reported a short while ago that former Tampa Bay starter Chris Simms is scheduled to visit the Patriots tomorrow, and it's likely that Bill Belichick has Vinny Testaverde on speed dial. Testaverde played in seven games with the Panthers last season.

Regardless of who it may be that is under center for New England in the coming weeks, at this point none can hold a candle to Brady. But then again, those who thought Brady would be a comparable replacement for Drew Bledsoe eight years ago were probably few and far between as well.

The pundits will now predict impending doom for the Pats, and Belichick and company will use this as fuel for another run at a Super Bowl title.

ahhhhhhhh...NO!

The Curse of getting caught cheating continues...first the fines, then the Bowl, and now the injury to an MVP.

This is a CURSE!!!

You gotta be kidding said:

CURSE?!? Are you all right? Please... This is the 21st Century right? Maybe Belichick should sign up Madam Babushka for protection.

Football and sports in general are about training, study, concentration, team play, and strategy. The spy-gate nonsense is over and done with and really overblown. The rules were broken but I don't think having a camera on the field rather than in the stands, gave them much of an advantage.

Brady is a great QB but he isn't the whole team. If that was the case why don't the Pats just sign up the practice squad and save a ton of dough.

If they can find a solid QB who can pick up on the game plan instinctively they will be competitive, there's too much talent for them not to be.

Curse?...give me a break...

I rember reading your comments recently about the Pat's perhaps needing to look at a veteran quarterback, and I thought that made a lot of sense. I was actually surprised they cut MG and more surprised that they cut him and didn't replace him with a veteran. But who knows what has been going on behind the scenes.
