Here's an example -- another in a lengthy list -- of the kind of guy Pats' personnel wizard Scott Pioli is:

Before the Falcons opened their season at home Sunday against the Lions, it was reported in Monday's Atlanta Journal-Constitution, Atlanta's new GM, Tom Dimitroff, received a voice mail from Pioli, who had been his boss in New England.

"It was a real emotional message about the magnitude of having the chance to do what I do in the game," Dimitroff told the paper. "He said to enjoy the first game -- embrace the moment. It left a lump in my throat."

Monday promises to be a very busy day for Pioli, as the Pats explore bringing in a veteran quarterback in the wake of Tom Brady's knee injury.

The names of Chris Simms and Tim Rattay have been widely circulated in the media, with Simms reportedly coming to Foxboro today for a physical.

The son of former Giants QB Phil Simms, who was MVP of Bill Parcells' Super Bowl XXI championship team, Chris was drafted in the third round out of the University of Texas by Tampa Bay in 2003. He started 10 games in '05, helping the Bucs win the NFC South, but injured his spleen in the third game of the '06 season and missed the rest of that year, as well as all of 2007. He played against New England last month in the second preseason game, completing 2 of 4 passes for 24 yards, but was cut by the Bucs on Aug. 30. A lefty, he has thrown for 12 career TDs, with 17 interceptions.

Rattay was drafted in the seventh round in 2000 out of La. Tech by the 49ers. He spent six seasons in San Francisco, moved to Tampa in '06, and was signed last season by the Cardinals. He has had 18 career starts, 31 TD passes, and 23 interceptions.
