INDIANAPOLIS -- Lucas Oil Stadium, which opened this summer, resembles on oversized -- on second thought, make that super-sized -- field house. Driving into the city from the west, where the airport is no more than 15 minutes from downtown, the imposing new edifice dominates the skyline. It is, quite simply, huge.
With a retractable roof, and large windows -- 88 feet high, 244 feet wide -- that open behind one end zone, the building holds 63,000, which is approximately 7,000 more than the old RCA Dome, which still stands on the adjacent block, although with its inflatable roof now collapsed inside the outer walls. The demolishing of the RCA Dome, the Colts' home field since moving to Indianapolis from Baltimore for the 1984 seasons, is scheduled to begin in late December.
The NCAA men's Final Four will be held in Lucas Oil Stadium in 2010, followed by the women's Final Four in 2011. The 2012 Super Bowl also will be held here.
