Destined for the playoffs?

SAN FRANCISCO -- The Jets control their own destiny. So do the Dolphins. And the Colts. And the Ravens, too.

But not the Patriots, who, even if they win they win their last two games -- Sunday in Foxboro against NFC West champion Arizona, followed by the season finale Dec. 28 at Buffalo -- still will need help in order to extend their franchise-record string of playoff appearances to six consecutive seasons.

The Jets will clinch the AFC East title if they win their last two games, or if they beat Miami and the Patriots lose a game.

The Dolphins -- who won just one game last season -- will win the division if they win their last two games. I'm expecting most fans know that Miami's final game is against the Jets at the Meadowlands.

The 10-4 Colts need just one more win to wrap up a wild-card spot.

The Ravens, despite losing Sunday to the Steelers in Baltimore, still can grab the other wild-card if they win their last two.

Other scenarios by which the Patriots can make the playoffs are described elsewhere in this blog. But the sad fact is that the Pats must continue to play their best, then hope for the best.

I don't think it's a sad fact. If the Pats can't beat 2 putrid teams like Arizona and Buffalo they deserve to go home. As for not controlling your own destiny--who cares. We're not talking about world beaters here. Outside of the Colts--any one of the other 3 could just as easily lose to the Detroit Lions--especially with their playoff lives on the line. It's called "choking". And it's done more often than not.
