Bill O'Brien, the man reportedly tapped by the Patriots to be quarterbacks coach and to assume some of the duties of offensive coordinator, was a linebacker and defensive end at Brown University from 1990 to 1992. After graduating, he began his coaching career at Brown, coaching tight ends in 1993 and linebackers in 1994. O'Brien then found his way to the Atlantic Coast Conference, where he was a coach at Georgia Tech, Maryland and Duke, before joining the Patriots staff.

Shalise Manza Young profiled O'Brien during this past season, when he served as Pats' wide receivers coach. In that story, Brown coach Phil Estes predicted that his old friend had the potential to move up quickly through the professional ranks:

"Absolutely. Absolutely. He's very organized, very perceptive, I think he sees things on the field that others may not see. He gets along very, very well with other coaches, but at the same time he's very demanding. It's only a matter of time. People that really know him know that he's something special."
