Apparently you can go home again -- at least if you're Tully Banta-Cain. The Patriots have just announced the signing of the team's former 2003 seventh-round draft pick, as well as the signing of TE Brad Listorti.
Banta-Cain, 28, signed a lucrative free-agent contract with the San Francisco 49ers in 2007, but reportedly showed up for his first training camp overweight and was released by the team in a salary-cap move a week ago after two disappointing seasons. After 10 starts, 59 tackles (37 solo) 3.5 sacks and a fumble recovery touchdown in his first season with the Niners, his defensive snaps dropped this past season, and Banta-Cain recorded seven tackles and a half-sack, which came in October against the Patriots.
Listorti, 24, was a standout at UMass. Signed by the Falcons as a rookie free agent last year, he was cut by Atlanta in August and had two stints on the Jets' practice squad during the regular season.
