Welcome to the NFL head coaching ranks, Josh McDaniels. According to multiple media reports, the young former Patriots offensive coordinator made a bid to get his former student, Matt Cassel, from the Patriots in a three-way trade involving the Tampa Bay Buccaneers. But the trade didn't work out, and McDaniels is now left with a marquee quarterback, Jay Cutler, who is furious and doesn't want to talk to his new coach at this point. The Broncos, meanwhile, insist that they never wanted to trade Cutler, all reports aside.
"They want me to come in and talk to 'em but I'm not doing it right now; I'm going to lay low," Cutler told ESPN's Chris Mortensen. "The [Broncos] deny everything. That's a problem. We know for a fact they tried to trade me."
To make things worse, Denver's very talented but troubled wide receiver, Brandon Marshall, was arrested in Atlanta yesterday on a disorderly conduct charge related to his involvement in a fight. Marshall was suspended for three games last season because of his past legal transgressions. He had the suspension reduced to one game when he convinced NFL Commissioner Roger Goodell that he would stay out of trouble in the future.
The good news, according to Marshall's lawyer, is that the charge against the wide receiver has been dismissed.
