With training camp technically now over, there are no more public practices, and that also means that media access is back to being a 45-minute open locker room period as well as press conferences with Bill Belichick.
In the locker room today, a few players drew large crowds, including Vince Wilfork, Wes Welker and Logan Mankins.
Once the media crush had died down, Wilfork spoke about his contract situation with reporters from the Boston Globe and Boston Herald. Asked about team owner Robert Kraft's recent claim that New England has avoided signing any long-term deals because of the labor uncertainty in the NFL with a potential lockout in 2011, Wilfork said he's not buying it.
"No. Not at all, because there's 31 other teams out there, and a lot of them are making moves. They're in the same situation we're in," he said, via the Herald. "I understand what he's saying, but at the same token, it's not stopping the other teams from making their moves, and what they have to do. Trust me, I understand where they're coming from. We have a lot of guys on this team that are going to be up. Pretty good players. I know that's pretty tough for them, but at the same time, the labor situation, it's all over the NFL, so, it is what it is. Like I said, it doesn't stop other teams from making moves."
I also had a nice chat with rookie Myron Pryor, who has been a surprise thus far in the preseason. He has struggled with asthma for much of his life, but clearly has made the most of his talent, and feels that a lot of his success thus far with the Pats can be attributed to the support he receives from his family and church in Louisville.
Belichick is scheduled to talk at 3:15 p.m., with practice access to follow. Benjamin Watson's pads were on his chair at his locker, a likely sign he'll be back on the field.
