Matt Sherry of Rumford, a former Journal All-State selection as a tight end for Bishop Hendricken who played college football at Villanova, has rejoined the Cincinnati Bengals.
A sixth-round draft choice of the Bengals last year, Sherry spent the 2008 season on the Injured Reserve list after undergoing surgery last summer to repair a torn labrum.
He was, somewhat surprisingly, waived by the Bengals in May, but has been brought back following a season-ending injury to veteran tight end Reggie Kelly, who ruptured an Achilles tendon in a practice session Monday.
The 6-5, 255-pound Sherry will be battling for a roster spot with veteran Ben Utecht, who came to the Bengals in 2008 from Indianapolis as a free-agent signee, and third-round draft choice Chase Coffman of Missouri, who set an all-time, NCAA record for receptions by a tight end with 247 - 90 of them last year, which tied the NCAA single-season mark for tight ends.
Other tight ends in training camp with the Bengals include Daniel Coats, a backup the last two years, and rookie free agent Darius Hill.
Villanova's leading receiver in 2007, when he caught 37 passes for 461 yards and 5 touchdowns, Sherry also was named the Colonial Conference's Football Student-Athlete of the Year - in part because, after earning his undergraduate degree the previous spring, he had begun working on a Masters in Business Administration while playing his final football season.
