'The ego has landed' -- and other observations about Brett Favre

The Ego has landed.

That's one small misstep for the Vikings, yet another giant leap into silliness for everyone else.

"We've all been down this road before," Charles Woodson said from inside the Green Bay locker room.

So many times, in fact, that the rolled-over odometer has finally revealed the truth:

The Vikings -- they of the Onterrio Smith Whizzinator, the Lake Minnetonka Love Boat, the four failed Super Bowls and that pup tent of a stadium they play in -- and Brett Farce, uh, Favre deserve each other. A match made in Mankato, don't you think?

-Michael Hunt, Milwaukee Journal-Sentinel

Brett Favre showed up 45 minutes late for the nationally televised press conference where he discussed his decision to come out of retirement and become a Minnesota Viking.

There is no truth to the rumor that, during that time, he retired again, changed his mind, then retired once more before finally deciding he would, after all, play a 19th NFL season.

What's really shocking is not that he's back, or that the Vikings front office broke nearly every rule in the book about team-building to make it happen. Or that closing in on 40, Favre is willing to risk getting hurt or turning his legacy into a permanent punchline.

It's not even having to endure another of those phony-baloney, tear-filled farewells that he's has turned into a rite of spring.

No. It's that Minnesota might just be the latest stop in Favre's "Revenge on the World" tour, starring a cranky, increasingly creaky, QB who doesn't know what to do with himself so he sets out to avenge every slight going back to Pop Warner days.

Question: If you're a Vikings fan, would you rather have Favre or either of Minnesota's current "established" quarterbacks, Tarvaris Jackson or Sage Rosenfels?

Answer: No matter how much you dislike Favre and loathe his inability to stick to a decision, you know the answer.

-Rick Morrissey, Chicago Tribune

Consider this Vikings team won the division in 2008 with Gus Frerotte playing quarterback. They can contend for the NFC title with Favre, a clear upgrade.

The Vikings aren't the Jets. They have the most complete defense in the NFC and the best running back in the NFL. The Jets needed Favre to play the role of savior much more than the Vikings do. That over-reliance made Favre often look over-the-hill and a biceps injury that was worse than anybody really knew didn't help either.

He underwent surgery to fix the arm, and Favre still throws harder than at least half the quarterbacks in the league. Objectively, a guy who will turn 40 this season rates behind Jay Cutler and the Packers' Aaron Rodgers as the best quarterback in the division. But he doesn't have to have a Pro Bowl season for the Vikings to compete for the Super Bowl.

-David Haugh, Chicago Tribune

The Vikings are ecstatic with what Favre already has brought to the franchise in terms of interest and revenue. From midmorning, when news of Favre's signing broke, to 4 p.m. CDT the Vikings sold 2,000 season tickets and 6,000 single-game tickets.

"There hasn't really been a day in Vikings history with this kind of volume for season tickets in one day," said Steve LaCroix, Vikings vice president of sales and marketing. LaCroix said Ticketmaster is adding additional infrastructure to handle the demand for tickets.

-Minneapolis Star-Tribune

Is this about winning, or is this about payback?

I already know what Brett Favre's answer will be. He'll say his latest unretirement is about winning. He'll say it's about a quest for another Super Bowl. He'll say it's about the Vikings' terrific defense and the opportunity to work with an explosive weapon like Adrian Peterson.

And I say, bunk.

No matter what comes out of "Brat" Favre's mouth -- and by now, we should know he's a consummate double-talker -- returning to the Vikings is largely about sticking it to the Packers one mo' time.
