Seymour not in Oakland

Richard Seymour has not yet reported to the Oakland Raiders, and at this point it is unknown when or if he will.

A team official has confirmed to San Francisco Chronicle Raiders reporter David White that Seymour has yet to fly into town for his physical. Oakland head coach Tom Cable is scheduled to hold a press conference this afternoon.

Seymour is not happy with the trade, and as of yesterday was not taking calls from Raiders officials, preferring to let agent Eugene Parker handle the situation.

The veteran defensive lineman is not afraid to take a stand, as shown by his past contract holdouts and his refusal to toe the company line when it comes to keeping injuries hush-hush or not talking about the impact of team decisions (Deion Branch's trade), and as of now he is taking a stand on this trade.

There are implications to his not reporting, however. As detailed by ProFootballTalk.com this morning, if Seymour digs in his heels, New England and Oakland could try to come up with a new trade agreement or call off the deal.

Or Seymour could receive a "five-day letter," a precursor to being placed on the reserve/left squad list.

According to NFL spokesman Michael Signora (again, via PFT), "The club sends a letter to the player warning him that, in five days, the club has the right to place him on the reserve/left squad list. It explains to him that if they do place him in that category, he cannot play again this season, etc. After sending that letter and the expiration of the five-day period, the club does not have to place the player on the reserve/left squad list, but it may do so."

If the trade only goes through if Seymour reports, then New England would be the team sending the five-day letter. If the teams re-work the deal, the Raiders could acquire Seymour's rights without the player reporting, which happened with the Buccaneers and Jake Plummer a couple of years ago.

If placed on the reserve/left club list, Seymour would be unable to play for any team in 2009 and he would not collect his nearly $3.7 million salary for this season; his contract would toll up by a year and he would receive that money in 2010 if he chose to report.
