The New England Patriots have shipped defensive line stalwart Richard Seymour to the Oakland Raiders in exchange for the Raiders' first-round draft pick in 2011.

The Pats have confirmed the news, which was first reported by Mike Reiss of the Boston Globe.

In a word, this move is stunning. The first first-round draft pick for New England under Bill Belichick when he was selected sixth overall out of Georgia in 2001, Seymour went to five consecutive Pro Bowls from 2002-06 and was selected to the Associated Press All-Pro team three times.

Though Seymour had struggled with injury and saw a decline in his production in 2007, when he spent the first six weeks of the season on the PUP list, he bounced back last year, tying his career high with 8 sacks.

The 6-foot-6, 310 pound 29-year old is in the final year of his contract, and with so many other key players also coming up for contract renewal, it didn't seem as though Seymour would be around in 2010.

We will have more on this throughout the day.

It's a good deal for NE, now sign Vince!!! Seymour was expendable at this point for the money he was paid. His last couple of years have been nothing to speak of.

Yeah but who's going to get to the QB for this team? I love the Pats but you really gotta wonder about going with so many unproven guys on D this year... I mean, both Banks and King picked them to win the SB. Why, exactly? Does everybody think they're THAT much better than the Steelers/Chargers/maybe Colts? I love the offense - everybody does - but I just can't see how to win big games with the guys we have on D as it stands. They traded Seymour possibly to afford keeping Wilfork but I can't see how this trade helps this year. Whatever. What do I know?

This trade helps in a couple ways. Not only does it free up some space to be able to re-sign wilfork and other key agents, it also allows Derrick Burgess to go back to the d-end position where he can be a monster at attacking the QB. It also gives the pats a good 4-3 front which they have been playing this preseason. With Warren and burgess at the ends and wilfork and the up and coming Ron Brace should he be ready could make abig and quick front 4. As for the three linebackers, Thomas, Mayo, and Guyton I feel will get the job done. Not only was this trade a goodmove, it was a smart move.

Remember Chris, Seymour was also once an unproven guy. Great players like Seymour come and go in cycles. It is in the nature of the beast so to speak. As one team member said today, the younger guys are ready to step up.

It seems like he is trying to get his family and affairs in order. I am sure he will be a great addition to the Raiders once everything is resolved.
