| Football Today: With Edelman out, Pats must find a new No. 3 receiver »
Bill Belichick just wrapped his press conference, and said the Patriots "have moved on on that one" as pertains to Joey Galloway, who was released earlier today. "He's had a great career; it just didn't work out," Belichick said. He added that the team also decided to move on from tight end Michael Matthews, and that the team will retain the conditional draft pick it had given to the Giants to acquire Matthews since the conditions of the deal had not been met. More from Belichick: * The clock has been started on rookie WR Brandon Tate and T Mark LeVoir, who began the season on the Non-Football Injury and Physically Unable to Perform lists, respectively. New England now has a maximum of 21 days to determine whether or not to place them on the 53-man active roster or on season-ending injured reserve. Either player can be placed on the active roster at any time during the 21-day window. * Belichick acknowledged that the team released and re-signed Tully Banta-Cain. Reportedly, it was done with an eye toward signing the linebacker to a longer-term contract; Banta-Cain was initially signed to a veteran-minimum deal which is a one-year contract that cannot be extended. * As for Eric Alexander, Belichick denied that the special teams ace had ever been released (at least over the last 24-36 hours), which is contrary to reports. * Though he predictably did not give any specifics about Sammy Morris' injury, Belichick did allow that at this point it looks like he will be back this season: "If the player wasn't going to be back during the season, then we would place him on injured reserve." * Belichick also confirmed that Sam Aiken had signed a contract extension. "He's done a great job for us; the players elected him in overwhelming fashion as special-teams captain and he's done a great job at receiver at different points. He's a player that we have a lot of respect for." |
