Picking this weekend's NFL games

Picking games so far this year has been much easier than in recent years, especially since there are so many bad teams -- no fewer than six winless clubs after four weeks. The season record is 46-16. Home teams here are listed in caps.

Steelers over LIONS: Last year's Super Bowl champs visit last year's 0-16 team. The fact that the Steelers aren't as good and the Lions aren't as bad as they were before shouldn't make much difference.

GIANTS over Raiders: The NFL's most powerful team should punish Oakland all day.

BILLS over Browns: The Bills looked awful against Miami last week, but they should still beat Cleveland at home.

Cowboys over CHIEFS: This could be a danger game for a Dallas team that is facing a lot of criticism. I like Tony Romo to rebound against the weak Kansas City D.

Vikings over RAMS: The Rams are getting the Vikings on a short week, but I might still pick Minnesota if they had to go to St. Louis on just one day's rest.

RAVENS over Bengals: An intriguing battle for first place in the AFC North. Baltimore proved last week that they are not as good as a lot of people suspected. Cincinnati has won three straight, but they haven't looked all that convincing in any of those contests.

PANTHERS over Redskins: Here's one team that will be winless no more. Washington just cannot score, and Carolina coming off a bye week should play better than they have through their first three games.

EAGLES over Bucs: Tampa Bay's defense is horrendous, and the Eagles are an explosive offensive team coming off a bye week and getting its quarterback back.

Patriots over BRONCOS: Tough game to pick, but Tom Brady looked very impressive in beating the Ravens last week -- help from the officials or no help. The important thing is that he looked very confident in the pocket, despite the Ravens' pass rush, and if he plays like that he will be able to pierce the Broncos' so-far impenetrable defense.

49ERS over Falcons: Atlanta just is not the same team on the road. San Francisco is playing outstanding defense for Mike Singletary.

SEAHAWKS over Jaguars: This is looking like another lost season for the injury-plagued Seahawks. Meanwhile, Jacksonville has won two straight and no longer looks like one of the league's doormats. But Seattle still is tough to beat at home, and they get Matt Hasselbeck back, which is a big deal.

CARDINALS over Texans: Arizona has had two weeks to let the sting from the pasting that Indianapolis gave them on Sunday night football fester. If they have pride, they should put up a lot of points on Houston.

Colts over TITANS: Indianapolis has been the AFC's best team so far, and Tennessee is officially a shambles.

Jets over DOLPHINS: Beyond all the talk from Joey Porter, Channing Crowder and the rest, what we have here is simply a matchup between two teams -- one of which is superior to the other. There is no shame for the Jets in losing at New Orleans, now is when they prove that they are for real by rebounding against the vastly diminished defending AFC East champions.
