Bill Belichick takes losing about as well as a child takes to having its favorite toy snatched away, but after the Patriots' undressing at the hands of the Ravens yesterday, the head coach was not just frustrated, but also seemed sad.
In his season-ending press conference this morning, Belichick was asked about his emotions yesterday, and he used the words above.
"Our season ended. It's the finality of it," he said. "It's like you're on a treadmill and you're running however fast -- I don't run that fast -- and you hit the 'stop' button and it stops and you fall off."
Belichick's opening statement touched on the disappointment of Sunday's loss, saying that the team worked "long and hard" during the season. But he didn't want to look forward, saying that his years in the NFL have taught him not to make decisions in the hours immediately following the final game of the season.
"I'm sure there's a lot of questions...In all honesty, maybe we're asking ourselves what you would ask," Belchick said. "We'll look at all of it and try to make the best decision for 2010 and going forward. At this time, I probably wouldn't be able to shed a lot of light on (things) going forward.
"It was tough to see the season end today, yesterday, and to be here today, but that's the reality of NFL football. We have to work hard next year to get back to the point we were at yesterday at 1 p.m."
