Bill Belichick's first official press conference of the postseason got off to an interesting start, with one of the Boston news (not sports) reporters badgering him with questions about Wes Welker's status and Belichick's Monday comments about the turf at Reliant Stadium.
On Welker, Belichick would only say, "We've covered that. We're on to Baltimore. We're done with that."
When the reporter persisted, saying fans were talking about the receiver and the season-ending knee injury he suffered in the first quarter on Sunday, Belichick pursed his lips. "I've already said it. He's a great player."
As to the turf -- during his weekly appearance on WEEI yesterday, Belichick called the Reliant field "terrible" and "one of the worst fields I've seen" -- the coach again would not bite.
"We're onto Baltimore. The regular season is over," he said.
Belichick did touch on the Ravens, of course, his relationship with their head coach Jim Harbaugh, the offensive scheme of Baltimore coordinator Cam Cameron, which the Pats have experience with, and Fred Taylor and Sammy Morris and whether the fact that both missed time this season might be a positive, allowing them to have fresh legs.
Belichick said it can be both a positive and negative.
