--Patriots training camp is in full swing.

The team just finished its first practice of training camp and everybody that was in attendance, both on the field and in the stands, seemed to be in good spirits despite the rain that fell on Gillette Stadium throughout the first half of practice.

The 90-minute practice consisted of stretching before the team broke up into individual drills categorized by position. The receivers and tight ends caught passes from the quarterbacks while the running backs ran their own drills as did the offensive and defensive linemen, the defensive backs and special team players.

Midway through practice the team had a scrimmage against each other before breaking up into more individual drills. The biggest play of the scrimmage was a 48-yard pass from Tom Brady to Randy Moss who was pushed out of bounds at the two-yard line.

About two-thirds of the way through, the team scrimmaged again in a goal line situation and the defense kept the offense out of the end zone on three straight plays, forcing the offense to settle for a field goal. Tate dropped a would-be touchdown pass in the end zone on first down.

As expected, Logan Mankins (contract dispute) was not in attendance and Nick Kaczur took most of the reps with the first team at left guard in his place. Brandon Tate, Julian Edelman and rookies Taylor Price and Devin McCourty took turns returning kickoffs with the kick-return unit.

Mike Wright often lined up with the first team at right end alongside nosetackle Vince Wilfork and left end Ty Warren. Gerard Warren and Ron Brace are also in contention for the defensive right end starting job.

Before practice, coach Bill Belichick said that a few players were "day-to-day" and there were a few players missing from the morning session, including wide receivers Sam Aiken and Darnell Jenkins, Brace, and linebacker Derrick Burgess while Wes Welker did
individual drills on the field but not with his teammates.

The Patriots will return to practice this afternoon at 3:45 p.m.
