The Boston Herald is reporting that the Patriots and quarterback Tom Brady are on closing in on a three-year, $58-million contract extension that would be worth $19.3 million a year. The report is that the team has put the deal on the table and that the Brady camp may accept within 24 hours.

Brady is in the final season of his contract and is set to make $6.5 million this season, making him significantly underpaid by the standards of star NFL quarterbacks.

Brady turned 33 last month.

Not surprisingly, Bill Belichick wouldn't touch the report during his conference call with the media just after noon.

"I don't have anything to report on any contracts," he said.

Meanwhile, ESPN's Adam Schefter has tweeted that "two knowledgeable people say reports of deal being in place are 'inaccurate' and 'wrong'. We'll see."
