FOXBORO -- Patriots coach Bill Belichick just finished his final press conference of the 2010 season and said that he is proud that the Patriots finished with the best record at 14-2 but that was not the ultimate goal for the Patriots.
"Better record than any other team in it, that was good but that's not the final measuring stick so we all have a lot of disappointment today in the final result," said Belichick. "I think we all understand what the playoffs are, it's a compilation of the best teams playing each other at the highest level of competition. I think that's really where you measure all the teams...There's obviously some things that we're going to have to do better relative to that. We found that out last year too. We'll try to address those."
Disappointment was what Belichick expressed most about the Patriots 28-21 loss to the Jets in the AFC divisional round of the playoffs.
"Definitely a day that's sort of like one where things happen and it ended unexpectedly," said Belichick. "You always think your season is going to continue. We had a lot of confidence going into the game. It didn't work out. So it's a disappointing day. We had our chances but in the end we couldn't make as many plays as they did. Certainly a lot of good things that happened for us this season, but unfortunately it gets overshadowed by the final result. We'll have to work hard to get back to this point.
"Going forward, there are a lot of things in the future that are questions that we just can't answer, and probably won't be able to answer for quite a while, a lot of things that are out of our control as an individual football team that play into a bigger picture. We'll deal with those in due course. In the meantime, we'll try to deal with the things that we can have some control over and move forward with our preparation in the offseason, like the draft and stuff like that."
Belichick said that the entire team will be evaluated this offseason, and that includes the coaching staff.
Two players that he commented on were offensive lineman Matt Light, whose contract is up, and running back Fred Taylor, who is contemplating retirement.
"I've talked to those players," said Belichick. "I think that's a common situation every year with every team so I don't think we act like it has never happened before. I don't know if the day after the end of the season is the time to make a lot of decisions on those things. In due course though, I'm sure those decisions will all get worked out by a combination of factors, some by the players, maybe some by the club, maybe a combination of both. We'll just have to see how it goes
"That's pretty common this time of year for every team to have a certain number of players in that situation and again you communicate with it, you work your way through it and in the end it works out one way or another."
By coaching the Patriots to the best regular season record in the AFC, Belichick has earned the right to be the head coach for this year's AFC Pro Bowl team.
When asked about the honor and the fact that the Patriots have eight players selected to the team, Belichick said: "That's definitely not where we want to be but we'll go out there and do it."
In the past, the Patriots have persuaded other Pro Bowl players to come and play for the organization. When asked if he will be doing some free agent scouting at the Pro Bowl, Belichick said: "Based on the level and tempo of those practices, I think that will be pretty minimal. [I'll] scout the golfing."
As far as looking ahead to what the offseason will bring, Belichick said that the Patriots will make personnel decisions based on what they feel is best for the team.
