ORCHARD PARK, N.Y. (AP) -- The Buffalo Bills have released veteran tight end David Martin to make room to promote cornerback Terrence Wheatley from their practice squad.

Martin is a 10-year veteran who was into his second season with Buffalo. Used mostly as a blocker, he had no catches while appearing in all three games this season.

Wheatley was promoted on Tuesday to add depth to an injury-depleted defensive backfield. Veteran starter Terrence McGee is out indefinitely with a hamstring injury, while rookie Aaron Williams is out indefinitely after hurting his collarbone in a 34-31 win over New England last weekend.

New England's 2008 second-round pick, Wheatley appeared in only 11 games with the Patriots before being released in November. The Bills (3-0) travel to play at Cincinnati (1-2) on Sunday.
